Chase Sapphire Reserve – Increased Sign Up Bonus

Adam Sterling Leave a Comment

The Chase Sapphire Reserve is Chase Bank’s premium credit card. It was introduced roughly six years ago with tremendous fanfare. It became a very popular card instantaneously. The included benefits have gone through a couple of changes since its inception. If you were thinking of getting the Sapphire Reserve, it’s a good time to do so.

I wrote about the card a little over two years ago. Why write about the Sapphire Reserve again? There is a new sign up bonus! It has increased from 50,000 Ultimate Rewards points to 80,000! Even better is that the minimum spend requirement didn’t change. So essentially, its 30,000 Ultimate Rewards points for the same effort. At the very lowest value, 80,000 Ultimate Rewards points are worth $1,200. For only $4,000 in spend, this is a very good return.

This newly increased sign up bonus will only be around for a limited time. I don’t know when it will return to the normal amount. If I did, I would say so.

Is this the highest ever sign up bonus for the Sapphire Reserve?

Honestly no, but it is very close to it. When this card was introduced, the sign up bonus was a whopping 100,000 points. After that, the sign up bonus has never gone as high as it is today. This is as good as time as any to get the card.

Should You Get the Sapphire Reserve?

Keep in mind that Chase considers the Sapphire Reserve and Sapphire Preferred as the same product. If you have one, then you won’t be able to be approved for the other one. Also, if you have earned the sign up bonus for either card within the last 24 months, then you won’t be eligible to get it again until after 24 months. This is from when you earned the sign up bonus, not when you opened the card. You can still be approved for the CSR or CSP, but you won’t be able to get the sign up bonus again.

This sign up bonus makes the Sapphire Reserve much more enticing than it was before. The Sapphire Preferred is almost always recommended more. Now, I consider the two cards to be pretty much on par. If you value airport lounge access, the Sapphire Reserve is the right way to go. Otherwise, it really comes down to the benefits and how valuable they are to you.
