Alaska Airlines Announces New Mileage Plan Partner: AeroMexico

Adam Sterling Leave a Comment

I just received an e-mail from Alaska Airlines announcing AeroMexico as their newest Mileage Plan partner. I was quite surprised about this as Alaska Airlines already serves 8 Mexican destinations (Cabo San Lucas,Guadalajara, Loreto, Manzanillo, Mazatlan, Mexico City, Puerto Vallarta, and Zihuatanejo/Ixtapa); though they are all on the Pacific side or Baja (with the exception of Mexico City).  This gives Alaska Airlines another partner airline that is a SkyTeam member.

Having AeroMexico as a partner makes sense.  I was even conincidently looking last week to see if Alaska Airlines has AeroMexico as a Mileage Plan partner.  AeroMexico’s route map within Mexico, and from/to USA & Canada), fits nicely with Alaska’s presence in Mexico.  For example, there is service from Cancun to Miami, New York (JFK), and seasonally to Los Angeles and Nashville (huh?!?).

You can earn Mileage Plan miles (and elite qualifying miles) on AeroMexico.  Tickets in V, L, W, and P fare buckets will only earn 75%, other economy fares will get 100%.  You will also earn a 500-mile minimum. On flights less than ~665 miles, you’ll earn 500 miles if you are booked in the lower economy fare class.  Business class earns a 25% bonus.  View the details here.  This partnership also gives Alaska Airlines’ customers another partner to earn miles on Central & South American destinations.

It is also possible to redeem Mileage Plan award travel on AeroMexico.  In my opinion, it’s quite good, especially for Central or South American redemptions.

I think this is a positive overall change in Alaska Airlines’ already strong frequent flyer program.  It’s nice to see a positive change after seeing so many other airlines and hotels devalue their programs (I’m looking at you Delta and Hilton).
